- Plan ahead: this includes talking to your kids about the upcoming campervan holiday and getting them excited about the trip. Also think about what your children enjoy doing (e.g. swimming, riding bikes) so that you can choose a route and destinations that will keep their interest.
- Type of campervan: ensuring that you book the most appropriate campervan is half the battle, but we hope our guide has given you some ideas as to what might best suit your family.
- Packing: if you plan on doing some swimming while on holiday, pack a beach towel for each child as you can never have enough towels! Also ensure that you have everyone's hats, swimming costumes and sunscreen. For older kids, they might like to pack their own bag (with a little help from mum and dad!).
- Meals: simple meals are best while travelling in a campervan. Preparing quick and easy meals will help keep your stress levels down as well as satisfy hungry kids. Some good choices are spaghetti bolognese, sausages and vegetables, steak and salad, tinnned soup, hamburgers, pancakes and omolettes. Also pack some of their favourite snacks such as fruit (including dried fruit), muesli bars, cheese sticks and crackers.
- On the road: reading books, DVD's and colouring books are must-have's while on the road. You can also play road games like "I Spy" or even try sing-along's. The main point to remember is that most kids won't want to be sitting in a seat for a long period of time, so try to plan for short drives no longer than 3-4 hours. Or if you do need to drive longer, try to plan it around sleep times (if your children can sleep in their seats!). Try to stop every 2-3 hours to allow the kids to stretch their legs, burn off some energy and go to the toilet.
- At the campground: we recommend that you overnight in caravan parks or designated campgrounds. Kids will be excited to reach their destination so try to arrive during daylight so that they can explore the area before it gets dark. They can then also help set up the campervan or motorhome for the night.
